New technologies imply new applications but also new ways of thinking about human activities like perceiving, communicating and interacting.
One of these technologies is virtual reality which, when coupled to other ways of reproducing natural scenes as well as creating new ones, has provided human computer users with the possibility of creating, with different degrees of realism, the notion of presence. The usefulness of presence is difficult to assess since it may be introduced in different human tasks such as teleoperation, virtual sets, training scenarios, etc. On the other hand, usability, as defined by a number of different international standards, has gained popularity as metrics to be employed when evaluating software from the user's point of view. The connection between presence and usability will be explored and discussed in this work so as to underline the human issues involved.
