Active Vision
The active approach to vision and to perception in general, is the most
recent evolution of researches in the field of artificial vision. The
fundamental concepts at the basis of such approach are a direct control and
a specific utilization by the observer of the resources at her/his
disposal, are they sensors, actuators or elaborative processes.
The efficacy of an active control of camera parameters in different tasks
specific to an autonomous perceptive system has already been demonstrated
by different researchers operating in several countries. On the other hand,
the presented results are principally in the field of autonomous navigation
tasks.
Laboratory projects includes experiment with such techniques and exploration
of advantages coming from active vision in recognition processes. In this field
the study of exploration sequences (fixations) of an environment
by an observer and the relations between these and
more specifically cognitive processes will have a central part.
For this purpose a system for camera movements at ten degree of freedom
(4 movements + 6 optical parameters controls) is under completion.
Very strong is the connection with the Distributed Perceptive Systems and
Multi-resolution.
