Neural Networks and Evolutionary Strategies were among the first examples of autonomous problem solving systems. They offer a tentative set of building blocks and construction rules.

Here we concentrate on technical problems where a value is given from the outside. We define pragmatic information as the precision to which this value is fulfilled by a construct.

The construction process may lead to emergence by which we mean the appearence of a structure (e.g., a construct with a long range correlation) connected with a sharp increase in pragmatic information.

Creativity and complexity are notions connected with the process of emergence. In particular it is argued that emergence cannot be described adequately by classical concepts of time and logic.

Thus we shall pose (but maybe not answer) the following questions:

  1. Which building blocks and construction rules are helpful?
  2. Which values are relevant, and how can we formulate them?
  3. Which are the consequences of the complex concepts of time and logic?
